What is a Transit Center?

Transit centers serve two distinct purposes:
Riders use transit centers to access and navigate the transit system.
  • Transit centers are often the connection point between multiple routes, so riders transfer from one route to another at the transit center.
  • On-Site Ticketing. Many transit centers also have ticket offices and kiosks. While online and digital ticketing allow many riders to pay for their transit trips using their phones, digital ticketing does not work for everyone. Centralized kiosks allow for the purchase of tickets at an on-site machine, which can be easily monitored and maintained. A ticket office can act as a central location for riders experiencing issues with their payments, who have lost their passes, or who have questions about fares.
  • Customer Service. Some transit centers also have an on-site customer service desk to answer questions about routes and schedules. Their presence can also enhance security at the transit center.
  • Travel training. These programs are offered by many transit agencies to help those with an interest or need to travel safely and independently on the public transit network, gaining mobility and freedom. People Mover’s travel training program is currently housed at the main offices off of Elmore Road, but was previously located at the downtown transit center.
  • Transit centers can also house other amenities of interest to riders such as bicycle storage, food options, convenience stores, etc.
Operators and managers use transit centers to facilitate efficient organization and operations of the system.
  • Operator Facilities. Transit centers provide breakrooms and restrooms designated for the bus operators. Restroom facilities for the bus operators are required for drivers to use during their breaks. People Mover sometimes makes agreements with nearby businesses to provide these accommodations; however, having these facilities at the transit center, results in less impact to the system schedule.
  • Bus Staging and Layover. Transit centers provide staging and layover areas for buses between routes. These areas must be near the end of routes to ensure reliable schedules and service levels. (The current transit center area downtown accommodates 8 bays (marked bus stops) for 10 routes and 11 layover bays (areas where buses without passengers can park).
